šŸ“ā€ā˜ ļø Welcome to the Conch Republic

A History of Rebellion—Island Style

The Conch Republic isn’t just a quirky nickname—it’s a living, breathing symbol of Key West’s one-of-a-kind spirit. This “nation” was founded on April 23, 1982, in response to a surprising and frustrating federal move: the U.S. Border Patrol set up a checkpoint on U.S. Highway 1 in Florida City, effectively cutting off the only road connecting the Florida Keys to the mainland.

Locals, businesses, and leaders were outraged. The checkpoint was causing massive traffic delays, discouraging tourism, and making life in paradise feel like a restricted zone. Rather than simply protest, the people of Key West decided to take a bold, hilarious, and unforgettable stand.

Led by then-Mayor Dennis Wardlow, Key West symbolically seceded from the United States, declaring itself the independent Conch Republic. In full theatrical fashion, they raised their own flag, declared war on the U.S.—then immediately surrendered and applied for foreign aid. The stunt caught national media attention, made headlines across the country, and became an instant part of island lore.

We Seceded Where Others Failed

Today, the Conch Republic stands as a proud reminder of the Keys’ free-spirited, humorous, and fiercely independent nature. Each year in late April, Key West celebrates its ā€œindependenceā€ with a full week of festivities:

  • Parades and parties

  • A raucous sea battle reenactment

  • Sunset sails, costumed characters, and local mischief

It’s one of the most beloved festivals in Key West—and a must-experience event for anyone who loves a good story and a better party.
